Bowsers in South Africa — fuel and water on every site
Bowsers — fuel and water tanks for mobile dispensing — are essential on farms, mines, construction sites and any operation that can't run on grid services.
Diesel bowsers
SA diesel bowsers must comply with SANS 1518 (tank construction) and SANS 10089 (storage and dispensing). Look for bunding (secondary containment), overflow protection, earth strap and bonding points, and SABS-approved pumps and dispensers (typically Piusi, Tatsuno or similar). Sizing: 1,000–2,500 L for small farms and emergency refuels; 5,000 L for medium contractors; 10,000–20,000 L truck-mounted for mines and large remote sites.
Water bowsers
For dust suppression on haul roads, mine sites, construction platforms and stockpiles. Sprayer-equipped units cover roads at controlled rates. Typical sizing 5,000–18,000 L truck-mounted or trailer-mounted. Some units are dual-purpose (tank suitable for either water or potable supply — never use the same tank for both diesel and water).
Configuration options
Trailer-mounted (tow with a bakkie or truck) — most flexible, easy to move between sites. Skid-mounted — drop-in for the back of an LDV or flatbed truck; cost-effective. Truck-mounted (rigid) — purpose-built fuel tanker on a Hino/Isuzu/UD chassis; the standard for large sites and route deliveries.
Fuel control
Add-ons that pay back quickly: digital flow meters with PIN access, nozzle locks, GPS fuel tracking, printed-receipt dispensers for stock reconciliation. Theft and unauthorised use of fuel is one of the largest controllable cost lines on a mid-size operation.
