Rollers and compactors in South Africa
Compaction is the unglamorous step that decides whether a road, platform or pipeline trench lasts five years or fifteen. SA's road and civil sector runs a large fleet of rollers and compactors across every project from rural gravel roads to N3 upgrades.
Soil rollers (single-drum)
Used for compacting subgrade, sub-base and fill. Padfoot drums for cohesive soils (clay), smooth drums for granular materials (gravel, sand). Sizing: 8–10 ton for general civils, 12–15 ton for mainline roads, 20–25 ton for mining haul roads and large platform work. Bomag and CAT lead the SA market, with Hamm, Dynapac and Sakai strongly represented.
Asphalt rollers (tandem & pneumatic)
For finishing hot-mix asphalt during paving. Tandem steel drums for initial and intermediate rolling, pneumatic-tyred rollers (PTR) for finish rolling and sealing. Hamm, Bomag and Dynapac are the standard SA fleet.
What to inspect
Vibration mechanism — start the machine cold, engage vibration and listen for bearing noise. Drum surface — any flat spots or significant wear. Drive motors — leaks at the drum hubs. Articulation joint — play and oil leaks. Tyres (on PTR units) — condition and pressure. A roller with sound vibration and drum is a strong buy even at high hours.
