Highway mainline horses are optimised for fuel economy — aero kits, sleeper cabs, automated transmissions, low rolling resistance. Mercedes-Benz Actros, Scania R-series, Volvo FH and MAN TGX dominate this segment. Off-road / mining horses are spec'd for traction and toughness — heavy-duty axles, twin-steer, bull-bars, snorkels, reinforced chassis. FAW, Powerstar, MAN TGS and Iveco Trakker are common picks.
Brand reliability and resale in SA
Mercedes-Benz Actros and Scania lead resale value and dealer support. Volvo FH is the operator favourite — strong cabin, strong I-Shift transmission, excellent fuel economy. MAN is the value-end of premium. FAW and Powerstar offer the best value for new — slightly higher running costs but materially lower entry price.
What to inspect on a used horse
Mileage matters less than service history and engine condition. Test the engine under load (highway test if possible), check transmission through all gears, inspect the fifth wheel for wear, look at chassis for cracks and repair welds, check brakes (especially air system), and verify tyres and FRC.
