Buying a generator in South Africa — the IronYard view
Load-shedding, grid instability and off-grid work have made the diesel generator one of the most-purchased capital items in SA over the last five years. Whether you're protecting a home, a factory line, a mine shaft or a remote farm, the right generator is the difference between running through outages and losing production every week.
Sizing — the number that matters most
Undersize and you'll trip the set on startup surges; oversize and you'll wet-stack the engine, waste fuel and shorten its life. The rule: total your continuous load, add the largest motor's starting surge, then add 25% headroom. For homes, 8 kVA covers essentials; for full-house including geysers and pool pumps, 15–20 kVA. For a workshop with a compressor and welder, 25–40 kVA. For a factory line, size against the electrical load schedule.
Brand landscape in SA
Cummins and Caterpillar are the flagship industrial choices — full dealer support, deep parts pipelines. Perkins-powered FG Wilson and Olympian sets dominate the mid-market. Volvo Penta, John Deere and Deutz are workhorses in agri and industrial. SDMO (Kohler), Himoinsa and Atlas Copco cover premium standby. Chinese-built sets (Weichai, Ricardo) have grown fast in the value segment — buy carefully and insist on genuine control panels.
Hours, condition and what to inspect
Diesel generators are long-life assets — 20,000+ hours before major overhaul is normal. Inspect the canopy (rust, sound insulation intact), radiator and cooling (leaks, corrosion), fuel system (tank condition, leak-off return), control panel (Deep Sea, ComAp — working AMF/ATS integration), exhaust (silencer condition), alternator (bearing noise, insulation resistance) and service records. A well-serviced 8,000-hour set from a reputable operator is a stronger buy than a low-hour set from unknown history.
Finance, delivery and installation
IronYard finances generators over 24–60 months through all major SA lenders, arranges nationwide delivery on flatbed or Hiab, and coordinates COC-compliant installation with ATS/AMF panels, cable, earthing and bulk fuel tanks. One number, one delivery, one point of accountability.
