    What material does a BW211 compact?

    Best on granular sub-base, sand, gravel and cohesive-granular mixes for road formation, embankments, dam walls and bulk earthworks. Not ideal for asphalt (choose a tandem roller) or pure clay (choose a padfoot BW211PD).

    BW211D-40 vs D-50?

    The D-50 is the higher-frequency, higher-force spec — better compaction depth on granular material. D-40 is fine for most SA roadworks.

    How deep does it compact?

    Effective compaction depth is 400–600 mm on granular material at typical layer thicknesses. Density testing on-site should always confirm.

    What's a padfoot BW211PD?

    Same base machine but with a padfoot drum — designed for compacting cohesive soils (clay). Interchangeable padfoot shells are available but rare in the aftermarket.

    Fuel economy?

    6–9 L/hr in typical roadworks use. Substantially lower than an equivalent CAT CS76 or Hamm 3520.

    D-40 vs D-50 vs PD

    • BW211D-40 — the standard spec, 27 Hz / 32 Hz vibration, suits most SA roadworks.
    • BW211D-50 — higher frequency and centrifugal force, better on deep lifts of granular material.
    • BW211PD — padfoot drum, for cohesive soils (clay-heavy fills).

    Buying used

    Check the drum for wear (a worn drum reduces compaction quality and is a R 120k – R 220k replacement), the vibration bearings (listen for rumble at low speed), and the articulation joint. A well-serviced BW211 with 3 000 – 5 000 hours in the R 750k – R 1.1m band is a strong buy for any civils fleet.
