CAT 420 vs JCB 4CX — The SA TLB Showdown
The CAT 420 and JCB 4CX are the two most familiar backhoe loaders on South African sites. Both are workhorses. Both hold value. But they solve slightly different problems.
Caterpillar 420

JCB 4CX

The verdict
The JCB 4CX has four-wheel steer and true four-wheel-drive with equal-sized wheels — genuinely useful on tight sites and when back-filling around structures. The CAT 420 is simpler mechanically, has stronger Barloworld support, and typically fetches a better resale price. For a rental fleet, CAT. For an owner-contractor on tight urban sites, JCB.
