The CAT 140G — the grader that built South Africa's rural road network
Walk into any SA municipal yard or road construction depot and you will find a CAT 140G, or its H- or K-series descendants, either working, waiting for a job, or being cannibalised for parts to keep another one running. There is a reason: the 140G is arguably the most durable single piece of construction equipment ever built.
Buying a used 140G — the honest checklist
- Frame: check for cracks around the articulation joint and the front axle mounts. Cracks here are terminal.
- Tandem drives: listen for whine, feel for slip. Rebuild is R 80k – R 150k a side.
- Circle and drawbar: worn circle bearings cause blade wander. Rebuild kits available.
- Hydraulics: on older 140G machines, valve stack rebuilds are routine but achievable.
- Blade and cutting edge: budget for cutting edge replacement within 500 hours of purchase.
140G vs 140H vs 140K
The 140G is the classic — mechanical shift, ubiquitous parts, cheapest to buy and to run. Good for entry buyers.
The 140H brought powershift transmission and a materially better cab. Sweet spot for most SA buyers today at R 950k – R 1.3m.
The 140K is the modern machine — Tier 3 engine, optional joystick controls, best fuel economy, best cab. Long-hold pick.
