The CAT 966 — the aggregate and stockpile loader of choice
For quarries, aggregate yards, coal handling and general stockpile work at the 20–25 ton class, the CAT 966 is the SA benchmark. Bell 2306, Volvo L120 and Komatsu WA380 compete hard but the 966's parts network and residual value give it the edge.
Which generation?
- 966G — bulletproof, cheap, thirsty. Good for buyers with strong workshops.
- 966H — the value pick today. Modern-ish cab, ACERT engine, R 1.6m – R 2.1m for a clean example.
- 966K — the balanced pick. Great fuel economy, powershift transmission, modern electronics.
- 966M — the current-generation machine. Best productivity, lowest fuel burn, most expensive.
What to check before buying
Bucket pins and bushings (play here is expensive), tyre condition (huge cost item), articulation frame welds, transmission behaviour in all gears, and hydraulic response under load. A 966 with 60% tyre life and full service history is worth material money more than an equivalent machine with tired rubber.
