The CAT 966H — the value pick in the 966 family
The 966H was the machine that convinced sceptical operators the ACERT engine platform was a genuine step forward. Better cab, better fuel economy, better hydraulic response than the outgoing G-series, and — a decade on — the H-series has become the value sweet spot in the 20-ton loader class.
Buying a used 966H
- Torque converter — feel for slip during a heavy pile push. Rebuilds are R 90k to R 160k.
- Transmission — test all gears in both directions.
- Bucket pins, articulation frame welds, cylinder seals — the standard checklist for any 20-ton loader.
- Tyres — the single biggest ongoing cost item.
Ownership economics vs a 966K or M
The 966K and M deliver meaningfully better fuel economy (2 to 4 litres per hour lower burn) and more modern electronics, but they cost R 700k to R 1.2m more up front. For most SA quarry and aggregate operators a well-maintained 966H is the correct capital call.
